Fertilization & weed control
Feed the lawn. Crowd out the weeds. All season.
A balanced fertilization and weed control program timed to Minnesota's seasons. Right products, right amount, applied at the right window so the lawn fills in and the weeds don't get a foothold.
Hansen's runs a five-step seasonal fertilization and weed control program timed to Minnesota cool-season grass: pre-emergent in early spring, slow-release feeds through the year, and a winterizer in late fall. Add-ons include grub control, lime, and overseeding.
Healthy turf chokes weeds out on its own. The fastest way to a thicker, weed-resistant lawn is a steady fertilization program timed to how cool-season grass actually grows in Minnesota: feed before the spring push, hold steady through summer stress, and load it up in fall when roots do the most growing. Minnesota also restricts phosphorus in lawn fertilizer under MN Statute 18C.60, and our program is built to comply by default.
Our 5-step seasonal program
-
Step 1: Early spring
Pre-emergent crabgrass control with a starter feed to wake the lawn up evenly.
-
Step 2: Late spring
Slow-release feed plus broadleaf weed control for dandelion, clover, and creeping charlie.
-
Step 3: Summer
Heat-stress feed timed to keep color without forcing growth. Spot weed control as needed.
-
Step 4: Early fall
The most important application of the year. High-potassium feed to drive root growth.
-
Step 5: Late fall
Winterizer feed so the lawn stores energy and greens up earlier next spring.
-
Add-ons available
Grub control, lime, soil tests, and overseeding can be added to any step.
What you can expect
Visible results inside the first two visits.
Most lawns show noticeably deeper green and reduced weed pressure within two applications. By fall of the first season, thin spots have filled in and the lawn pushes much harder against weeds without help.
- Application notes left on the door after every visit
- Pet- and family-safe products, with a brief return-to-lawn window
- Clear seasonal calendar so you always know what's next

Frequently asked
Common fertilization questions
-
Are the products safe for kids and pets?
Yes, when used as directed. We follow label return-to-lawn intervals (usually 24 hours after granular applications, until dry for spot sprays). Notes are left on the door so you know exactly what was applied and when it's safe to use the lawn again.
-
Can I just buy bags from the hardware store?
You can, but timing and rate are what matter most. Off-the-shelf products are fine if you apply at the right windows for cool-season grass and at the rate the soil actually needs. Our program does the timing and rate decisions for you.
-
What if it rains right after an application?
Granular products are designed to need water to activate, so rain right after a treatment is actually ideal. For sprays, we time around heavy rain so the product has at least a few hours to bind.
-
Will this fix a really weedy lawn?
It will improve a weedy lawn dramatically over a season, but the fastest path is fertilization plus a fall core aeration with overseeding to fill in the thin spots where weeds keep coming back.
